Women or Doctors: I Need Answers

If you would be so kind, I need some answers. This afternoon my doctor told me that I need to go off of HRT (hormone replacement therapy). She’s willing to taper me off of Premarin slowly, even if it takes a year. But she wants me off. I’ve been on it for almost 32 years. Her words, “You need to go through menopause” were not the happiest I’ve heard. You can imagine.

I am 67, and she told me that Premarin is associated with breast cancer. Fortunately, there is no history of breast cancer in my family.

So, at this point, I am gathering information. What I want to know specifically, in terms of epilepsy, is whether any of the challenges of going off of HRT could have negative effects. I’m thinking, for example, of night sweats that could keep me awake, therefore affecting my sleep. Lack of quality sleep is my #1 seizure trigger.

I feel that I can manage stress quite well. I would not look forward to gaining weight, however, which I know is an issue. I need to lose weight now.

I have already been reading about all of this, and I know there are dietary and exercise changes I could make easily that would give me support through this.

Can anyone enlighten me or help me with information as I face this upcoming challenge?

I thank you.

P.S. (I hope this wasn’t TMI!)

No, no, no, no, no!

  1. I’m 38 and have had a Mirena coil due to a severe hormone imbalance for the last ten years – I would have needed a full hysterectomy without it.

Because my imbalance is so severe the idea is to keep me on it until blood tests show that I’ve finished the menopause, because to make me go through it without the coil would be tantamount to torture and malpractice!

Unfortunately I do occasionally suffer “breakthroughs” in which my hormones override the coil, and I do notice that my seizures are worse when this happens. Also around my time of the month I become easily stressed and upset and this makes my seizures worse too.

I would go back to your doctor and discuss this issue with her. It’s important that she’s aware of any possible arising issues before they happen x
